Things You Must Believe

There are some basic beliefs without which we cannot have a peaceful and successful life.  We have no hope or assurance without these beliefs.  Without them we have little reason for living.  The assurance that our loved ones truly love us and stand ready to help us in time of need gives us worth and comfort.  Can you imagine what a nervous wreck someone would be if he had no assurance that the sun will not keep on shining, or that he will die at any moment?

Hebrews 11:6 makes mention of a necessary belief.  It is to believe in the existence of God.  The verse says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”  It is cruel to rob children of their belief in the existence of God.   It leaves them with no logical explanation for life and the world around them.  If there is no God, then there is no absolute law giver.  There is no eternal punishment for wrong doing or reward for doing right.

The faith that people should have in God is being destroyed by the teaching of evolution.  Evolution doesn’t give us a logical explanation for life and the universe.  Chance is not a logical explanation for order and design.  If you will be honest with yourself, you will have to admit that.  In our day we are expected to accept evolution as science.  The truth is that there is nothing scientific about it.  It is just a theory.  It is a myth.  Most Christians don’t claim that the teaching of creationism is scientific.  It can’t be proven.  Accepting by faith what the Bible says about origins is much more reasonable and logical than the theory of evolution.

If evolution is true, then the Bible isn’t true because it clearly teaches that all things were made by God.  John 1:1-3 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  The same was in the beginning with God.    All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.”  If the Bible is wrong about the origin of the universe, then we have reason to doubt that it can be trusted.

If there is no God, then we are left on a sea of uncertainty.  We are left with a multitude of questions that have no reasonable answer.  We are left with no absolute moral laws.  That fact that so many in our day have abandoned faith in God is the explanation for the social unrest that we are experiencing.  Many people live with no thought of how their actions will affect others.  If there is no God there will be no final judgment.

My faith in God gives me stability in life.  It gives my life purpose and direction. It gives me consolation in the trials of life.  It gives me hope for the future.  I see people’s lives devastated because of grief.  They have nowhere to find comfort.  They fall into deep depression.  Some commit suicide.  I think, “It wouldn’t be that way if they knew God.”

When I consider the worlds that God has made it gives me assurance that life has meaning and purpose.  When I read of the promise of future life in heaven I say, “If God could make this marvelous universe, with all its beauty and harmony, then I have no reason to doubt that he can make a heavenly city where we shall dwell in glory for all eternity.”

Belief in God does great things for us, but it isn’t sufficient.  The Bible tells us in James 2:19 that even the devils (demons) believe in God.  “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.”  We must also believe that Christ died and gave his life a ransom for us so that God could forgive our sins and make us one of his own. I Thessalonians 4:14 says, “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.” This makes us a child of God with all that is included in that.  John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”

When I consider this marvelous universe I am left with no reason to doubt the existence of God.  I would be a wicked sinner if I didn’t believe in God.  He has given me more than adequate reason to believe in him.  “My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad” ( Psalm 34:3). “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork”  (Psalm 19:1). Hebrews 1:10 says, “And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands.”  How can you be an unbeliever in the face of all the evidence for the existence of God?
