Do You Have A Relationship With God?

Genuine Christians are those who have a personal relationship with God.  If you don’t have a personal relationship with him, you can’t honestly say that you are a Christian.  That is not in harmony with the thinking of many people.  Most people think they are Christians because they attend a church, and because they abide by some Christian principles.  If that is what you think, you can go on thinking that way, but until you have a personal relationship with God you don’t really have biblical Christianity.

There is a difference between having a religion and having a relationship.  Many people say, “I have my religion.” The dictionary definition for religion is:  “a system of religious beliefs.” These are the beliefs we have about God and the hereafter.  The Apostle Paul could say that he knew God.  “For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12).  Then, in Philippians 3:10, he expressed a desire to know Christ better. “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.”

It is one thing to know about God, but quite another thing to be able to say that you have a personal relationship with him.  Religious people might have a great deal of knowledge about God, without having a personal relationship with him.

Emotions enter into a relationship.  They may be positive or negative, but it is an emotional relationship.  When we read about someone, living or dead, we may have an opinion about him.  We may approve or disapprove of what he did, but it isn’t an emotional relationship.  As Christians, it is our duty to love God.  Matthew 22:37 says, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”

A Christian’s relationship with God isn’t always what it should be.  It could be because they are conscious of some sin in their life that they haven’t confessed.  It is possible to neglect our relationship with him.   The result of that is that our hearts will grow cold towards him.  When that happens, we find it harder to keep his commandments.  We may even break some of them.  God wants us to obey him because we love him.  John 14:15 says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Our relationship with God is maintained by spending time with him on a daily basis.  God talks to us through his Word as we read it.  We talk to God by means of prayer.

Friend, how is your relationship with God?  Do you have one?  If not, would you like to have one?  You can by going to God in prayer, asking him to forgive your sins, and make you a child of his.  Romans 10:9-10 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.   For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” If you have a relationship with God, keep it close by spending time with him each day.
