Condemned For Unbelief

John 3:18 says “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”  God has given us intelligence that far exceeds that of the highest animals.  For that reason, he has a right to expect much more of us.

Divine revelation comes from two sources.  One is called natural revelation and the other is written revelation, which is the Bible.  Romans 1:19-20 says “Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”

It’s hard to understand why men are so blind to natural revelation.  I spent 18 years of my life refusing to accept the fact that that there has to be a divine creator.  For the most part, I just didn’t give it any serious thought.  When I was a student at theUniversityofNebraskasome of my friends talked to me about God.  I was glad for their friendship, but I rejected what they told me about God.  It was obvious to me that they had joy and a reason for living that I didn’t have.  I wanted what they had, but I didn’t want to recognize that it was their relationship with Jesus Christ that made them different.

One day, in a botany class, we were in the laboratory looking at a leaf under the microscope.  I was overwhelmed when I saw all the movement in the cells of the leaf.  I said to myself, “There has to be a God to make something so marvelous.” Afterwards I felt ashamed to think it took me so long to accept the fact that all was made by an all wise God.  From my childhood I had been surrounded by the evidence, but I refused to accept it.

Romans 1:20 tells us that the eternal power and Godhead are clearly seen by means of that which he has made.  For that reason unbelievers are without excuse.  Modern men boast of the vast amount of data at their disposal and the great scientific advancements that have been made.  It’s unfortunate that many remain blind to the fact that the intricate design of nature and the universe demands that there had to have been an all intelligent creator.  To believe that everything came into being by blind chance is neither reasonable nor scientific.

God deserves to be worshiped because of his creation.  Revelation 4:11 says “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”  Many sinful men choose to be voluntarily ignorant.  Romans 1:28 says that God gives men over to a reprobate mind because they refuse to recognize him.  The word “reprobate” means worthless.  They are incapable of thinking right.  That explains why they can accept the theory that all came into being by happenstance.

A farmer plants his seed in the soil.  Through the forces of nature, that God designed, the seeds know that it’s time to germinate.  God has placed in the soil the nutrients the plants need.  The sun enables the plants to produce chlorophyll that gives the plants their green color.  Some plants have to depend on the bees to pollinate them so they can reproduce.  All these processes testify to the fact that there was an intelligent designer.

Why is it so difficult for men to see and believe that the earth and the universe was created by God?  I believe the explanation is found in II Corinthians 4:3-4.  “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:   In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”  These verses tell us that Satan has blinded the minds of the unbelievers.  They don’t want to accept that which is obvious and reasonable.  I Corinthians 2:14 says “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  We shouldn’t get offended if unbelievers say we are fools because we believe that the world was created by God.  We don’t make the claim that it’s a scientific fact that the world was created y God.  Neither is it scientific to believe that all came into being by chance.   It’s just a theory.  Since no one was there when it happened, we just accept by faith what the Bible says.

Just to believe that God is the creator of the universe isn’t acceptable for salvation.  It’s just the first step.  If we accept the truth that God is the creator that should motivate us to want to know more about him.  This knowledge we gain by reading the Bible.  After I accepted the fact that God exists, and that he is the creator, it was as if my understanding had a new dimension.  Everything made more sense.  Hebrews 11:3 says “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” God may give you over   to a reprobate mind if you go on rejecting the obvious fact that all was created by an all wise God.  Stop rejecting the truth and accept the fact that God is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.  (Hebrews 11:6)
