Apparel That Has The Appropriate Appeal

“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.”  (I Timothy 2:9).

To a certain extent, the spirituality of a church can be judged by the way the women dress.  It is difficult, if not impossible for a church to set dress standards.  Doing so may result in outward conformity, but it doesn’t reflect the heart condition of the people in the church.  Our desire should be to please the Lord.  “Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more”

(I Thessalonians 4:1).  For that reason, before touching on women’s apparel, it’s best that we give some thought to the matter of pleasing the Lord.

Ephesians 5:10 says “Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.”  This verse implies that there is that which is acceptable to the Lord, and that which is unacceptable.  The Greek word “proving” means to discern, allow or approve.  We need to study the “Bible to know what is acceptable to God.  If we do that, we can say, “I know that God approves of this because here it says…..” If we love the Lord, our desire should be to please him.

The great majority set their standards by what the world approves of.  They say, “If the majority dress in a certain way, then it’s in style and it’s alright for me.” Believers, however, shouldn’t dress to please the world, but rather to please the Lord.  Christian women should want the assurance that their apparel is acceptable to God.  With that thought in mind, we will consider the subject of apparel that has the appropriate appeal.

Any honest interpretation of what the Bible teaches will leave us convinced that God wants to maintain a distinction between male and female.  I Corinthians 11:14-15 says, “Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?   But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.” Deuteronomy 22:5 also says that  women ought not to wear men’s clothes.    “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”   Personally, I haven’t yet seen a woman who looked attractive in slacks.  There may be times when it’s alright for a woman to wear pants if she is doing dirty work, but she leaves a poor image of herself if she wears pants in public.

God loves beauty.  He made nature beautiful.  He also made women beautiful.  Sister, he wants you to be beautiful.   There are things you can do to enhance your beauty.  One of those things is to dress appropriately.  Another is to use some makeup.  Men should be attracted to a woman because of her beauty and not because of her sex appeal.

It’s true that a woman can neglect her appearance and still fulfill her function as a woman.  A house can serve as a dwelling even though the carpet is worn and dirty: even though the walls haven’t been painted for years and the grass outside is a foot high.  It’s much more pleasing, however to live in a house that is attractive and well maintained.  In the same way, it’s pleasing for a man to have a wife who is attractive.

Our text says that women should use some precautions in their adornment.  With everything there is the danger of going to the opposite extreme.  Some can be negligent in their appearance and others can be too extravagant.  You don’t need to spend a fortune to dress appropriately.  One thing this text is saying is that you shouldn’t dress to call attention to yourself.  You may need to spend a little more to be attractive, but it need not be a fortune.

Our text also says that you should dress modestly.  That is being greatly neglected in our day.  That is why this article is entitled:” Apparel That Has The Appropriate appeal”  “Modest apparel” is not designed to appeal to the sexual desires of men.  Perhaps some women don’t realize that they are arousing sinful thoughts in men by the clothes they wear.  Obviously, many do.  That’s why they dress the way they do.  You should dress to be attractive, not enticing.  Immodest apparel contributes to immorality.  The following is a quote taken from the book “Your clothes Say It For You” by Elizabeth Handford.  “The Atlanta Journal, March 3, 1970 reportedly ran a survey by Hollywood social Studies of top law enforcement officials in 50 states.  Of those who answered the questionnaire…90% believed girls who wear miniskirts risk increased danger of rape attack.  94% thought statistics showing increased molestation of young girls might be caused by shorter dresses now being worn.  98% said provocative clothing, including short skirts, might encourage men to sex crimes.” “Your Clothes Say It For You” by Elizabeth Handford  pp 72-73  

Clothing styles change from time to time.  They aren’t the same in every country of the world.  The way women dress isn’t something that can’t be changed as long as the world stands.  There is nothing wrong with changes in women’s dress as long as it is acceptable to God.  You don’t need to be odd for God by the way you dress.  The more the moral standards fall, the more Christians stand out by their behavior and by the way they dress.  In all that we do, including the way we dress, we should endeavor to complete God’s command in I Corinthians 6:20.  “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
