A Civilization In Decline

A Civilization In Decline

A civilized society is one that has reached a high level of culture, industrial attainment, and refinement of thought.  It results in a government that favors morality and justice.  It is attained only when the majority of the people are motivated to learn, work, and promote the physical, social, and spiritual well being of their families and those around them.

Civilizations rise and fall. Romeis often cited as a classic example of a civilization that fell.  It fell largely because they sought prosperity by the plunder of war and because the minds of the majority were engrossed in entertainment.

Everyone wants the luxury of living in a civilized society, but not everyone is willing to contribute to the well being of their society.  A society will not long remain a civilized society when the majority live to reap its benefits without contributing to it.  Freedom is not free.

TheUnited Stateshas enjoyed a high level of civilization.  It has given us economic prosperity.  It has enabled us to put education at such a level that many were able to earn a college degree by working their way through school. I earned my degree that way.  Now graduates have a $20-30,000 debt to pay off.   It has made it possible for entrepreneurs to start their own businesses and leave a legacy for their children.

We need to take into consideration the cause of the decline of our civilization.  Apathy seems to be the leading cause.  The apathetic person is indifferent to the needs of those around him, and to what is good for his country.  He isn’t motivated to study or learn a profession so he will have something to contribute to society.  As long as his needs are being provided, he sees no need of making any personal commitments.

Civilizations remain strong as long as a majority of the people respect and practice Christian moral standards.  When Christianity declines, the moral standards of the society also decline.  This allows for increased corruption in the government and business.  Marriage contracts are broken and families are dysfunctional.  Social problems and crime disrupt the society.  Psalm 14 helps us understand what happens when great numbers in society depart from God.

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.  They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.   Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.  There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.”

Proverbs 14:34 says “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

It is sad to see so many in our nation actively involved in an attempt to annihilate what made our nation great.  Secularism is an attempt to erase all thought of God from the minds of men.  They stir up animosity against Christians who defend Christian principles.  Groups that speak out in favor of the sanctity of life and the teaching that marriage is between one man and one woman are being labeled “hate groups.”  Christians don’t hate their enemies.  They are just standing up for that which is right and honoring to God.  The hate-mongers are those who try to stir up animosity against those who are doing what is right.

This is a day when God’s people need to put on the whole armor of God.  We read about it in Ephesians 6:10-18.  “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.   Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.    Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.    Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;    And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;    Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.    And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:    Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
